Bottle 11
  • Bottle 11

Handthrown in Tambasassayama Japan with rich feldspatic Shigaraki clay. This clay is famous for withstanding high temperatures and has rich chunks of minerals that burst through the clays surface.

Fired in a historically classified anagama kiln built by Master Potters Estelle and Bruce Martin of Kamaka Pottery. These bottles were tumble stacked in a 'high risk' zone, underneath the side stoke port. This meant that throghout the firing, wood got loaded on top of the work from a height and buried amoungst the flaming embers.

The colours and textures you see on these are the result. Each standing roughly 13cm high, sculptural bellies, necks and shoulders characterise them yet together they stand as a collection. Made in Japan, Fired in New Zealand.

Delicate and pourus enigmas, that tell their own story of where the piece was in the kiln, and how it was made. They capture a time in my practise where I’ve been developing my style, learning, growing and have a real innocence to them. They aren’t trying to be something, they just have an energy of their own.
